Wow! What can be said about this spring migration that hasn't already been said? It has been exceptional both in diversity and volume. One wonders what could be left? The 3rd wave has been coming through for a week now and should have one more good pulse left, and the weather this weekend looks like it should accommodate. Banding at Navarre shows we are getting into the second year females of most species but a surprising number of males are still passing through and singing their hearts out. We have been averaging 15-22 species of warbler a day all week. Dominants have been Magnolia, Canada, Wilson, redstart, Common Yellowthroat, and Mourning but Connecticut has been a daily visitor. In fact just this morning before leaving the station I had 3 separate ones singing. Flycatchers have been everywhere with Traill's (Alder and Willow) and Yellow-bellied most common. They too seem to be turning over to females. Cuckoos have been filtering but could have a good push this weekend. So if you can get out to the Lake Erie Marshes expect good variety, but you'll need to work with vegetation and many females that don't announce their presence. If you can't get to the lake then anywhere could bring surprises and start gearing up to participate in the Ohio Breeding Bird Atlas and pay forward to bird conservation.
