Walking around my own property, I didn't see any birds other than the summer residents. Carrying nesting material (yellow warbler) advertising for mates (brown thrasher) sitting on nests (e phoebe) or feeding young (ah, starlings). Looking for something new, late yesterday, I went to N. Chagrin Reservation, where too I saw only resident birds. But I did get a rare opportunity to watch a barred owl waking from his slumbers and starting to hunt. He fluttered down to tangle only ten feet from the ground, and sat preening for half an hour, accompanied by a solitary robin, constantly giving a shrill alarm call, Twice, he even swiped at the barred's back, to no effect. The owl was hunting over a small clearing in the woods....hunched forward, investigating every interesting movement and occasionally changing perches. I left him, still hunting, after an hour. This spot is on the trail behind the arboretum, where I have heard barreds calling before.
