On Saturday, George and Kelly Benish and I were atlasing whe we ran across a titmouse flitting around a raccoon sleeping in the crotch of a tree limb. The titmouse jumped aroung the coon for a short time , even jumping on it once (the coon simply twitched). From our vantage point, we could not see the head and neck of the coon. When satisfied the donor was sleeping soundly, the bird jumped on the neck area. The coon jumped and the bird came out from around the limb carrying a rather large hair donation and flew off to its unseen hole nest. A most interesting "Carrying Materials" confirmation code for the OBBA. According to the BNA description, coon, oppossum, cat, dog, horse, cow and even human hair have been found in titmice nests. I also found a Black-bellied Plover at the Harrison County Airport on Sunday. Not a rare bird in some parts of the state, but most certainly a pleasant surprise for this area. This morning, I think I found my first grouse nest. As my dogs were about, I had to exit the area before disaster struck and will return in a few days sans dogs to confirm.
