Today, Paula and I conducted the 14th June census. Weather was beautiful. Started out a little foggy, partly cloudy, east winds 5-8 mph. and temp 67 F. The June average number of species observed on the census is 61 and 2911 individuals. Today we had 65 species and 2578 individuals. The June average is 61 species and 2888 individuals so it was an average count. Bonaparte's Gull and Veery were observed for only the second time on a June census. The Bonaparte's was an adult bird in breeding plumage. It was observed at the same spot as the May bird, so may be an injured bird. Also of note were the 102 Cedar waxwings. It appears some are still migrating north. The island's Bald Eagle nest has two health young still sitting in it. 53 Double-crested Cormorant 26 Great Blue Heron 1 Green Heron 1 Black-crowned Night-Heron 158 Canada Goose 9 Wood Duck (8 were young) 35 Mallard 3 Turkey Vulture * Bald Eagle 1 Red-tailed Hawk 4 Killdeer 1 Spotted Sandpiper 1 Bonaparte's Gull 96 Ring-billed Gull 91 Herring Gull 6 Gull species? 1 Caspian Tern 1 Common Tern 7 Mourning Dove 6 Yellow-billed Cuckoo 1 Eastern Screech-Owl 11 Chimney Swift 1 Ruby-throated Hummingbird 3 Belted Kingfisher 30 Downy Woodpecker 5 Northern Flicker 13 Eastern Wood-Pewee 2 Willow Flycatcher 1 Eastern Phoebe 4 Great Crested Flycatcher 24 Eastern Kingbird 23 Warbling Vireo 4 Red-eyed Vireo 2 Blue Jay 14 American Crow 113 Purple Martin 77 Tree Swallow 17 Northern Rough-winged Swallow 8 Bank Swallow 205 Barn Swallow 31 Black-capped Chickadee 26 House Wren 4 Blue-gray Gnatcatcher 1 Veery 198 American Robin 1 Gray Catbird 29 European Starling 102 Cedar Waxwing 99 Yellow Warbler 3 Chestnut-sided Warbler 5 American Redstart 1 Scarlet Tanager 53 Northern Cardinal 3 Rose-breasted Grosbeak 47 Indigo Bunting 1 Eastern Towhee 14 Chipping Sparrow 2 Field Sparrow 1 Song Sparrow 414 Red-winged Blackbird 242 Common Grackle 41 Brown-headed Cowbird 11 Orchard Oriole 72 Baltimore Oriole 42 House Finch 16 American Goldfinch 60 House Sparrow 65 species 2578 individuals -- H.
