This is probably the peak week for migrant swifts in central Ohio, as Andi Wolfe's posting suggests, so now is when you want to check out known or possible roost sites. This evening, I stopped by a little-known site at Gahanna Lincoln High School and watched a flock of almost 1000 birds (960 by my count) swirl down into one of the school's accessory chimneys. The sight was so striking that several other folks stopped to watch as well, mesmerized by the funnel cloud of birds. It was a great moment, and I used it to give them a little impromptu talk about swift biology and conservation. Gotta use those teachable moments when they show up.
