September 26: The Sandhill Cranes of Jasper- Pulaski, Indiana - Mike Flynn Long, long ago (not really that long), in a field far,far away (not really that far), large numbers of tall graceful birds stopped at this unique wildlife area on their southern migration to rest, eat and associate with others of their own kind. These birds have come from southern Canada and the northern U.S. Their migratory flight to their wintering grounds brings them directly here. Plentiful food, essential roosting sites and a very significant large gathering area give them everything they need as they stop here before winging their way south. The first birds begin arriving in early autumn, about the first of September. Their population builds throughout the fall, peaking in mid-November. At this time in previous years, there have been 10,000 to 34,000 Sandhills that have assembled, making this the largest single gathering of Sandhills east of the Mississippi River. Join us tonight as we experience through slides and narrative the fascinating world of the Sandhill Cranes of Jasper-Pulaski. Mike Flynn has been a nature photographer since the age of 15, and a naturalist for much of his adult life. His photography has been featured in exhibitions and shows. He holds a degree in Environmental Interpretation from the Ohio State University. Mike's first trip to Jasper was more than 15 years ago, and he has made the journey here often. The magic of these grand birds continually draws him back to experience their amazing lives and observe their fascinating behavior. Mike is a Columbus Audubon trustee and a co-field trip chair. Please note: There is a field trip scheduled to Jasper- Pulaski in November through Columbus Audubon. If you are interested in learning more about this trip, it is important that you talk to Mike after the program. The timing for this trip's reservation deadline has been arranged to allow those from Delaware County Bird Club to participate, but due to the very special lodging and food, the reservation deadline is September 28th .
