A major weather system coming in from the Northwest is resulting in a lot of bird activity in the Lake Erie Marsh Region. An increase in number and variety in ducks has begun with Pintail and Wigeon numbers increasing. A major shift in species composition was recorded at Black Swamp Bird Observatory's main banding station at Navarre Unit, Ottawa NWR. Blackpolls continue to dominate, but the first big push of Yellow-rumps was captured today; the vast majority were adults. One of the better movements of Cape Mays was also witnessed as well as good numbers of Tennessee and Magnolia. Lots of Swainson's and Gray-cheeked Thrushes are around with the first of the Hermits arriving. Juncos were also seen, but this may the first time since BSBO's research began (more than 30 years ago), that neither kinglet was captured or seen during the month of September. Expect more change to occur over the next few days. Check out BSBO's banding page to see where we are in migration: http://www.bsbo.org/passerine/fall_passerine_migration_monitoring.htm or the Bander's Blog http://bsbobirdbander.blogspot.com/ Try to get out this weekend to say farewell to early migrants and greet the new arrivals.
