Headlands was a bit quiet this morning so I decided to head east. Eastlake had a good showing of RB Mergansers and many streaming over the lake. Bonapartes were still plentiful but not the magnitude that had been seen in the previous 2 weeks. An immature Bald Eagle stirred up the gulls a few times. I ran into the Kassouf's there and we decided to check out Sims. Sims Park offered close looks at Surf, Black and White-winged Scoters as they fed just off shore. One handsome adult male Surf Scoter put on a good show diving, surfacing, and then tucked and rode the waves. That had to be my favorite bird of the day. He was stunning and the lighting was perfect. About 10 Common Goldeneye, 2 Common Mergansers, 5 Lesser Scaup, and several Horned Grebes were also lazily riding the waves. A low flying immature Bald Eagle (the bird's plumage looked like it may have been the same one we had at Eastlake) stirred up the mix and by about 12:45 a great majority of the RB Mergansers had lifted and were heading westward. Best of birding to you. Irene ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
