Birders are big on lists-- North American list, Ohio list, a very few birders--county lists, yard lists, and lists of lists. Minnesota birders take lists to the extreme. They have lists of everything imaginable. It is relatively simple, and requires little knowledge for a birder to obtain their list(s) by a person camping on their computer, waiting for someone, who has expanded considerable time and resources, to post of a rarity they found. Is the "accomplishment", being able to drive "x" hours to see a rarity? Another list, thought of by someone else, is a list of birds/species found by the observer without computer assistance or the aid of an over-priced birding tour guide person. Say what?! You want me to find birds on my own? That is right, it's radical. But think of all the satisfaction you will have, knowing your list(s) is accomplished "the old-fashioned way". Fewer species, but maybe more satisfaction.
