I spent a few hours this afternoon up at the Wilds this afternoon with a friend visiting from Kansas. Highlight was an adult GOLDEN EAGLE soaring in the distance to the east along Zion Ridge Road. We watched the eagle for several minutes. Also several Rough-legged Hawks, Northern Harriers, Red-tailed Hawks, and Kestrels. A single Eastern Meadowlark along Zion Ridge was a pleasant surprise. Tons of Am. Tree Sparrows. The only waterfowl were two Mallards, two Buffleheads, and one Pied-billed Grebe hanging out together in one of the Zion Ridge ponds. Mostly just ice and not much open water on the ponds. We had 4 Short-eared Owls around 5:30 pm. Three flying along International Road and one perched along Zion Ridge. Nice start to 2012!
