Great find, Jeremy and Mark. You make reference to Red crossbills breeding a few years ago in Oak Openings Preserve Metropark. While a dozen or so Red crossbills were seen repeatedly in May 2009, and I saw a female crossbill possibly gathering nesting material later in June, I'm not aware that definitive breeding evidence was observed. If someone knows otherwise, I'd love to know the details. They were seen low along the bike trail 100m west of Girdham Road. Striking red males and yellow females were watering as a flock in the ditch beside the bike trail for about 5min. They collectively flew southwestward into the thinned pine stand where the species bred a few years ago (N41.556,W-83.855). Other notable birds seen within the OOMP included: a Northern Shrike inside the swath of tornado damage just west of the closed section of Wilkins Road (N41.541, W-83.840); 2 Pileated Woodpeckers (flying); 15 Pine Siskins (at Buehner Center feeders); and 5 Red-headed woodpeckers (Red Trail south of the Girdham Rd sand dunes).
