What a cold, snowy day! Not without birds though. Started out at 1 pm after it had "warmed up"? some :) For some reason I wasn't the only crazy one out. Caesar Creek still had several hunters so the lake was mostly devoid of birds. However, of the 2 waterbirds that weren't decoys 1 was a Pied-billed Grebe & the other in the middle of the lake was 1 BLACK SCOTER! This bird was fairly well seen from Harveysburg Rd ramp. Two boats flushed it up & it flew off towards the beach. Other highlights: 9 American Pipits (3 at the beach, 4 at Young Rd ramp, & 2 at Ward Rd ramp), & 5 LAPLAND LONGSPURS (in a group of Horned Larks) on Roxanna-New Burlington Rd. Spring Valley highlights: Feeders at the bird blind were full & thus full of birds best being 1 Fox Sparrow in a group of Tree & White-throats. No Virginia Rails seen or heard Roxanna-New Burlington gravel pit: Around 5 pm there were many geese present & more waterfowl flying in. Picked out 2 CACKLING GEESE from all the Canadas. Also 6 Ring-necked Ducks & 4 Black Ducks. Surprise were 2 SANDHILL CRANES. Hisey Park: 1 Long-eared Owl in same roost tree. Great find! I did not stay long so as not to spook the bird. Great day! ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
