Took my wife up to see the Long-eared Owl last night which was still present in the roost tree. Then went up to the gravel pit close to dusk after 5 pm. Lots of Canada Geese. Couldn't pick out Cackling but many were on the far hill which was hard to see. Other waterfowl included Mallards, Black Ducks, Redheads, Lesser Scaup, 1 Greater Scaup (FOS), Ring-necked Ducks, 1 Goldeneye, & 2 Ruddy Ducks (FOS). Evening seems to be the best time to check this area. 2 Sandhill Cranes were here still as well. Met Jay Lehman at Spring Valley with no Virginia Rails seen. After a great start to the year I figured I would try for 100 in January. After today I stand at 84 species with several "easy" ones left. I don't think I'll be able to get up to the lake so I'll have to pound it out here in southwest Ohio. Keep the good birds coming! ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
