Ben Morrison & I birded from Toledo to Lorain Friday. Highlights included: Woodlawn Cemetery in Toledo: 28 White-winged Crossbills along with one adult male Red Crossbill just north of the closed bridge, originally in section 25 then moving north from hemlock to hemlock. 5 Common Redpolls in the birches/alders on the NW side of the pond. Gray Catbird still in the shrubs behind the stone pyramid on the east side of the cemetery. Bayshore Power Plant in Oregon: 31 Black-crowned Night Herons Huron Pier: Purple Sandpiper working along the pier a bit south of the lighthouse. 1st winter Glaucous Gull & adult Lesser Black-backed Gull. More large gulls here than anywhere else we've seen although many remain far out on the distant ice. Unbelievable numbers of red-breasted and common mergs here along with many other ducks including 100 Canvasback which have been somewhat tough to find. Lorain Harbor: 3rd winter Iceland Gull at the north end of the marina along with 4 adult Lesser Black-backed Gulls. Less large gulls here than Huron but still huge numbers of Ring-billed Gulls and a few Bonaparte's. Incredible January numbers of both mergansers here as well. 10 Flyby Black Scoters among the variety of waterfowl seen from the north end of the marina.
