Hi all, It has never felt better than to come in 2nd (probably) this year on a CBC. Yes! Wooster counters reached the century mark for the 1st time this year, following a fantastic 108 species seen by Toledo birders - my hat off to them. Our 62nd consecutive count was held on Dec. 24th that turned out to be a very nice early Christmas present. The best bird of the day was a White-eyed Vireo - found and identified by a group of Amish teenagers and later photographed by Cheryl Harner and Ryan Steiner. It was found in the Secrest Arboretum (OARDC) at the south end of Wooster. This species was followed closely, if not as an equally good find Lesser Yellows- found and voluminously documented by Gary Cowell on the Wilderness Road south of the Funk Bottoms Wildlife Area. To my knowledge both of these birds have not been relocated since their initial discovery. As a group, we had 20 species of waterfowl, including all 3 species of swans. We also had a full complement of woodpeckers and wrens. In the most "difficult to miss, but missed" category were the hermit thrush and meadowlark. The nearly complete list (one party not reporting yet) follows: It includes 10 new high records, several new highs and a new species for the count- Double-crested Cormorant *Standard Common Name* *Total seen 2010-2011* *Previous High* * * * Status* Snow Goose (white morph) 1 6 Canada Goose 2418 5000 Mute Swan 2 4 Trumpeter Swan 2 7 Tundra Swan 180 30 new high Gadwall 69 65 American Wigeon 10 12 new high American Black Duck 164 465 Mallard 838 5487 Northern Shoveler 7 8 Northern Pintail 11 55 Green-winged Teal 1 31 Canvasback 1 5 Redhead 29 5 new high Ring-necked Duck 10 61 scaup sp.- probable Lesser 1 Bufflehead 10 3 new high Hooded Merganser 10 5 new high Red-breasted Merganser 1 6 Ruddy Duck 2 9 duck sp. 2,000 - sunset silhouettes 1500 new high Ring-necked Pheasant 1 19 Wild Turkey 66 200 Common Loon 1 1 tie high Pied-billed Grebe 7 8 Double-crested Cormorant 3 new species Great Blue Heron 26 36 Bald Eagle 2 7 Northern Harrier 3 21 Sharp-shinned Hawk 1 5 Cooper's Hawk 5 13 Red-shouldered Hawk 9 9 tie high Red-tailed Hawk 60 86 Rough-legged Hawk 3 18 American Kestrel 29 44 American Coot 614 116 new high Sandhill Crane 38 17 new high Killdeer 145 60 new high Lesser Yellowlegs 1 new species Wilson's Snipe 2 25 Ring-billed Gull 269 1500 Herring Gull 2 4 Rock Pigeon 299 812 Mourning Dove 606 749 Eastern Screech-Owl 3 18 Great Horned Owl 7 17 Barred Owl 3 10 Short-eared Owl 6 15 Belted Kingfisher 10 12 Red-headed Woodpecker 19 58 Red-bellied Woodpecker 140 234 Yellow-bellied Sapsucker 3 5 Downy Woodpecker 169 316 Hairy Woodpecker 40 43 Northern (Yellow-shafted) Flicker 60 64 Pileated Woodpecker 14 17 Northern Shrike 1 2 White-eyed Vireo 1 new species Blue Jay 328 364 American Crow 514 1415 Horned Lark 3 603 Carolina Chickadee 242 414 Black-capped Chickadee 25 250 chickadee sp. 45 180 Tufted Titmouse 195 252 Red-breasted Nuthatch 2 18 White-breasted Nuthatch 137 229 Brown Creeper 12 34 Carolina Wren 57 94 Winter Wren 3 12 Marsh Wren 5 6 Golden-crowned Kinglet 28 129 Ruby-crowned Kinglet 3 3 tie high Eastern Bluebird 203 273 American Robin 90 300 Gray Catbird 1 1 tie high Northern Mockingbird 24 26 European Starling 1610 9500 American Pipit 12 27 Cedar Waxwing 14 193 Common Yellowthroat 1 2 Yellow-rumped (Myrtle) Warbler 34 24 new high Eastern Towhee 13 36 American Tree Sparrow 807 1933 Field Sparrow 8 29 Savannah Sparrow 7 9 Fox Sparrow 8 6 Song Sparrow 437 486 Swamp Sparrow 99 113 White-throated Sparrow 139 179 White-crowned Sparrow 156 446 Dark-eyed (Slate-colored) Junco 301 777 Northern Cardinal 564 1002 Red-winged Blackbird 712 800 Rusty Blackbird 11 300 Common Grackle 157 862 Brown-headed Cowbird 113 504 blackbird sp. 300 600 Purple Finch 2 23 House Finch 117 414 Pine Siskin 96 148 American Goldfinch 265 430 House Sparrow 407 2511 Total Individuals 16,742 For more information and/or to be put on an email list for next year's count contact: Roger Troutman [log in to unmask] ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
