At 2:35PM on January 10th Mark Rozmarynowycz and I found a flock of 18 Red Crossbills in the Oak Openings Metropark (OOMP) in Lucas County. They were seen low along the bike trail 100m west of Girdham Road. Striking red males and yellow females were watering as a flock in the ditch beside the bike trail for about 5min. They collectively flew southwestward into the thinned pine stand where the species bred a few years ago (N41.556,W-83.855). Other notable birds seen within the OOMP included: a Northern Shrike inside the swath of tornado damage just west of the closed section of Wilkins Road (N41.541, W-83.840); 2 Pileated Woodpeckers (flying); 15 Pine Siskins (at Buehner Center feeders); and 5 Red-headed woodpeckers (Red Trail south of the Girdham Rd sand dunes).
