I was able to get some birding in on New Year's Day.  The wind and rains made it seem more like March than January.  Starting near home in Mahoning Co.: two flocks of wild turkeys were seen, with 10 birds in Poland Twp. and 13 in Coitsville Twp.  Also in Coitsville Twp. was an Am. kestrel.  During the day, I also saw Am. kestrels in Hubbard (Trumbull Co.) and Andover Twp. (Ashtabula Co.).  Mosquito L. had good concentrations of waterbirds at the NW and SW ends of the lake.  There was virtually nothing seen from the causeway, though.  Highlights at Mosquito: 50 Am. black ducks, 37 n. shovelers, redhead, ring-necked duck, lesser scaup, 19 buffleheads, common mergansers, hooded mergansers, ruddy duck, pied-billed grebes, bald eagle, 690 Am. coots, 25 Bonaparte's gulls, belted kingfisher, e. bluebird, and Am. tree sparrows.  I went to Pymatuning Res. next.  On the Ohio side of the causeway was a flock of 10 ruddy ducks, but virtually nothing
else.  Heavy rains ended my birding day at that point.  Craig Holt, Lowellville
