Today Carolanne Tkach and I conducted the 14th February census. February 2000 was not run because of inability to get to the island that month. Today started with about a half inch of snow on the ground and the temperature in the low 30's but ended with clear skies and a temperature of 40. We observed 46 species on the route of 2606 individuals. The number of species was above the average of 40 for February but the 2606 was about half the normal number of 5092. two species observed were new for a February census. They were Iceland Gull and Rusty Blackbird. Two additional species of note which were observed on the island but not on the census route were 22 Eastern Bluebirds and an Immature Northern Goshawk. Both species were found on the 22nd as well and photographed. 55 Canada Goose 26 Mallard 3 Greater Scaup 166 Bufflehead 912 Common Goldeneye 75 Common Merganser 11 Red-breasted Merganser 4 Bald Eagle 1 Sharp-shinned Hawk 1 Cooper's Hawk ** Northern Goshawk* 4 Red-tailed Hawk 1 Rough-legged Hawk * Wild Turkey *1 Killdeer* 17 Ring-billed Gull 158 Herring Gull *1 Iceland Gull 3 Lesser Black-backed Gull* 86 Great Black-backed Gull 3 Mourning Dove 1 Eastern Screech-Owl 4 Red-bellied Woodpecker 22 Downy Woodpecker 13 Northern Flicker 5 Blue Jay 216 American Crow 19 Horned Lark 103 Black-capped Chickadee 1 White-breasted Nuthatch 11 Brown Creeper 6 Carolina Wren 7 Golden-crowned Kinglet * Eastern Bluebird 5 Hermit Thrush 81 American Robin 166 European Starling 28 Yellow-rumped Warbler 14 White-throated Sparrow 9 Dark-eyed Junco 96 Northern Cardinal 94 Red-winged Blackbird 2 Rusty Blackbird 21 Common Grackle 2 Brown-headed Cowbird 23 Purple Finch 60 House Finch 13 American Goldfinch 56 House Sparrow 46 species 2606 individuals * = observed on the island on census day but not on census route Bold = rare of census/month Tom Bartlett -- H.
