Thanks to all who replied to the pileated/raptor encounter post from two days ago, the consensus was that the aggressor was a sharp-shinned or cooper's and not a merlin...I posted a few more shots since then, one of them showing the hawk alone atop a dead tree and this one showing both birds on the branch: http://www.pbase.com/tileman533/image/141556479 ...though the focus here was on the pileated and the hawk is not sharp...still, does look like a coop in this shot.
