A snowy owl was found just east of the Lake County dump in Painesville today. The dump is visible from Route 20 just east of where Route 2 ends. The bird was sitting on a mound of dirt a couple hundred yards east of the dump. I stopped after work hoping to get a photo, but the bird could not be relocated. Other birds of note along the lake in Painesville Township this morning were eastern towhee, fox sparrow, and gray catbird. The catbird may have wintered in the area as there is dense shrub cover with lots of multiflora rose. I also had a flock of 60 common redpolls. they were feeding in some birch trees. I thought there might be a good hawk flight, but it just didn't materialize. I did have about 130 turkey vultures, 6 red-shouldered hawks, and 2 red-tailed hawks.
