There were 3 Ross’s Geese at Cowan Lake this afternoon. The geese had steep foreheads and short bills that appeared to meet the head in a fairly vertical line. Jay Lehman saw the geese later and agreed on the ID. These birds were near, and later on, the island on the eastern half of the lake. At around 6pm the geese flew from the island. Laura Keene relocated the geese in the field south of SR 350 just south of the lake. There was also a Eurasian Wigeon at the far eastern end of the lake. It was viewed from the parking area near the small boat ramp at the east end of the lake on the south side but was mostly out of view, being further to the right where it was hidden by a line of small trees and other vegetation. If looking for the wigeon there are areas of the lake that can be viewed from the trail at Lotus Cove (number 4 on the map below) that cannot be seen from the south side. http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/Portals/2/parkmaps/cowanlakeparkmap.pdf Also on the lake, Canada Geese Wood Duck Gadwall American Wigeon Mallard Black Duck N.
