We birded the Guilford Lake Area this afternoon, Saturday, from 3:30PM to 5:15PM. The variety of waterfowl was amazing, with 14 different species found around the lake. The following are the highlights of our visit and how many: Common Goldeneye ~ 2 males, Common Merganser ~ 1 pair, Wood Duck ~ 1 pair, Northern Pintail ~ 4 pair, Northern Shoveler ~ 2 pair, Gadwall ~ 1 pair, American Black Duck ~22, Green-winged Teal ~ 34, Redhead ~ 14, Lesser Scaup ~ 16, Hooded Merganser ~ 74, Red-breasted Merganser ~ 28, Mute Swan ~ 4, Pied-billed Grebe ~ 1, Bald Eagle ~ 2 resident adults, Mallard ~ 40+, Canada Goose ~ 1 w/white neck band (black letters 2X4K), and Herring Gull ~ 15+. Guilford Lake State Park is in the western part of Columbiana County, about seven miles south of the city of Salem, west of Depot Road (CR410), north of SR172, and east of SR9. Roads completely circle the lake for excellent viewing access. Bob and Denise Lane / Damascus~Mahoning County
