What a beautiful day for our March bird count! Golden-crowned kinglets everywhere! Lots of beautiful Fox Sparrow and many Flickers. I have had many calls this week asking if the warblers were here yet because of the unusual warm weather we have had. As most of you know, the signal to migrate is more regulated by the length of daylight than the weather. Most of the warblers are still in the tropics. So I suspect that the migration will be pretty much on schedule. The vegetation now is another story! The trees and shrubs are really leaving out, several weeks earlier than normal. And lots of insects out already! So , we'll see how it all plays out....................... Today we saw or heard the following species: Canada Goose, Trumpeter Swan, Wood Duck, Gadwal, Pied-billed Grebe, Double-crested Cormorant, Great Blue Heron, Great Egret, Mallard, Am. Black Duck, Blue-winged Teal, Green-winged teal, Lesser Scaup, Hooded Merganser, Common Merganser, Bald Eagle, Am Coot, Killdeer, Ring-billed Gull, Mourning Dove, Belted Kingfisher, N. Flicker, Red=bellied Woodpecker, Downy Woodpecker, E. Phoebe, Tree Swallow, Black-capped Chickadee, White-breasted Nuthatch, Brown Creeper, Winter Wren, Carolina Wren, Am Robin, Golden-crowned Kinglet, European Starling, Red-Winged Blackbird, Common Grackle, Rusty Blackbird, Brown-headed Cowbird, N. Cardinal, E. Towhee, Dark-eyed Junco, Am Tree Sparrow, Fox Sparrow, Song Sparrow, Am Goldfinch, House Sparrow. We are doing a Woodcock Walk on Saturday, March 24.
