In answer to Kathleen's question, Based upon USFWS data from towers cited by it seems birds are more confused by steady lights than strobes: http://www.abcbirds.org/abcprograms/policy/collisions/towers.html It is a bit of a stretch to apply the same to camera flashes, but the fact that the birds don't spook from a flash says something. Personally I think the equipment is too big and blocks the boardwalk. I make like an immovable object when someone with a big camera rig is trying to push through. Easy for me being large and hulking, and amusing when they bounce off.
