Fellow birders, A few days ago, I reported about "my" Great horned owl taking "my" Red shouldered hawk right off her nest. Turns out that was just the beginning of the downside of having a Great horned owl nesting in your back yard. This morning, one of our seven dogs was missing. He was a ten year old Sheltie with one ear, named Rusty. We began the search at some of his favorite sleeping spots in the yard and found one spot with lots of fur. This is when I first feared the worst, because it reminded me of the nest site, except there was fur instead of feathers. We immediately went to the owl nest site, and the nearby roost tree, as we call it, where we often see the parents. I was stunned to find a hugh owl pellet filled with fur and one purple piece of a dog collar. Rusty's collar had his name and our phone number on it. We could actually read ... ty 74... on one small piece. Rusty weighed close to 25 pounds and we were completely stunned by these events, and still find it hard to believe. While we love birds, and especially owls, these owls has crossed the line and must go. A sad turn of events. joe in the woods Somerset, Ohio Perry County ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
