I spent Earth Day morning hiking around this MetroPark southwest of Columbus trying to stay warm & dry. I stopped at the Terrace Trail, Cedar Ridge, Kuhlwein wetlands, and the far northern (racetrack) wetlands. Birding was slow but steady and the morning produced a decent list. Highlights in 3 hours included Waterfowl - the racetrack wetlands were best, with Blue-winged Teal and N. Shovelers, along with Mallards & Coots Shorebirds - these same pools had Greater Yellowlegs, 2 Short-billed Dowitchers, and 10 Snipe along with the ubiquitous Kildeer Raptors - the raceway wetlands had a female Harrier, while an adult Broad-winged Hawk was lurking along the Terrace Trail Turkeys, Rails - Wild Turkeys could be heard gobbling from the Cedar Ridge overlook. A Sora was calling at the Kuhlwein wetlands. Woodpeckers - no lingering sapsuckers, but Pileateds were at both the Terrace Trail and Cedar Ridge Flycatchers - still only Phoebes, with singles at Terrace Trail and Cedar Ridge Swallows - small clusters of 8-10 Rough-wings along the creek feeding over riffles at several locations; a few Tree Swallows and Barn Swallows were over the wetlands Vireos - Blue-headed and Yellow-throated were both singing at Terrace Trail and Cedar Ridge; the latter spot also had White-eyed Wrens - House Wrens at many locations, but no Marsh wrens could be found at Kuhlwein Kinglets - still plenty of Ruby-crowns at both the Terrace Trail and at Cedar Ridge Thrushes - a Wood Thrush was singing along the creek on the Terrace Trail, while a Hermit Thrush was along the trail at Cedar Ridge Mimids - mostly Catbirds, which were several at different locations; a Thrasher was singing along the Terrace Trail Larks,Pipit - Larks were flying over both wetlands, but 1 Pipit was at the Kuhlwein wetland Warblers - mostly Yellow-rumped, but there were also Parulas (3), Nashvilles (FOS 2), Yellow-throated (5), Black-thr.Green (4), Black&White (1), Ovenbird (1 along Terrace Trail), and Louisiana Waterthrushes (4, including a pair at Cedar Ridge) Sparrows - still fair-sized flocks of White-throats at many locations, including 40+ along the Terrace Trail. Singing Swamps were at both wetlands, while a singing Savannah was at Kuhlwein wetlands Icterids - singing Baltimore Orioles were at the Terrace Trail, while singing Meadowlarks joined large #s of territorial Red-wings at the Kuhlwein wetlands ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
