Darlene Sillick, Leslie Sours and I went to Scioto Trails State Forest today hoping for warblers and other spring arrivals. When we arrived the temperature was 43 degrees and it later fell to 41 degrees. What happened to our nice Spring? Like tough little soldiers we grit our teeth and hung in there. Things were a little slow. Rumor is that the birds were huddled around tiny bonfires. We did manage to compile a decent list of species, some of which gave us splendid views. We had especially good views of Hooded Warbler, Blue-winged Warbler and Louisiana Waterthrush, all of which all but took a bow for their performances. There were innumerable Yellow-rumped Warblers and off course whenever you tried to put out a specific target you usually focused on a Yellow-rumped instead of the bird you started with. In the afternoon we headed north and checked the activity at Pickaway Plains. We were greeted by several Ring-necked Pheasants as soon as we arrived. They seemed to be all over the place and many additional pheasants were seen and heard. The wetland area near the northwest had numerous Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs plus a small group of Blue-winged Teal. We worked some of the fields where there were multiple grassland birds including Field, Savannah, Grasshopper, Henslow’s and Song Sparrows, plus Horned Larks and Killdeer. A complete list of species follows.
