I don't usually post just a list, preferring prose, almost to a fault. Thanks to all who responded with praise for yesterday's little tale about my five decades of hooded warblers. Following last night's rain and favorable winds I was expecting a wonderful dawn chorus. I woke up at 4:30 AM thinking about some work issues, and couldn't get back to sleep. It happens sometimes. So I took advantage of my restless state and got out at 6 for once. I was not disappointed. Seemingly every species was in full song. An hour and a half afield this morning yielded 54 species, a fine list for this (or any) property. Many migrants have now arrived. Folks up at the Lake can expect white-throated and white-crowned sparrows for a little while longer, since they were here in numbers today. My day list was augmented somewhat by a little serendipity. (There were also a few notable misses, but there are also some hours left in the day.) Waterfowl are not particularly common here, since we have no pond. But a mallard flew over this morning. And one point I was watching a rather large deer in the forest, when it flushed a turkey. Thanks! Life is good!
