I stopped at these 2 MetroParks, along with side trips to Portman Park and Sycamore Creek Park, looking for migrants this morning. Each of these areas is a more-or-less isolated woods that can hold migrants, and there was some activity this morning. I hit the Confluence area of 3-Creeks (which has the largest block of woods) first, then stopped at Portman and Sycamore Creek before finishing at Blacklick Woods. Notables included: Great Egrets - 2 were feeding in swale ponds east of the Confluence area of 3-Creeks Green Heron - 1 was at Turtle Pond at the Confluence area Red-shouldered Hawk - a molting adult was hanging around near the Beech-Maple Lodge at Blacklick Yellow-billed Cuckoos - heard birds at both Confluence and Sycamore Creek, while the Naturalist at Blacklick reported another Hummingbirds - 2-3 at each stop, all Ruby-throats Woodpeckers - nothing unusual today (other than Pileated calling at Blacklick) but a Red-headed was hanging around the Blacklick Nature Center on Thursday and Friday. It just wasn't seen yesterday. Flycatchers - lots of Pewees, Acadians, and Great Crested at all 4 sites; they appear to have arrived in bulk in the last few days Vireos - Red-eyed were common (5-10) at all 4 sites. Sycamore Creek had a singing White-eyed, while Blacklick Woods had a singing Yellow-throated Thrushes - not much, with a 1-2 Swainson's at each site, along with presumably resident Wood Thrushes Mimids - Catbirds were abundant at all 4 sites, while the only Brown Thrasher was a singing bird at Blacklick Woods Warblers - not many, but did scratch up 12 species total: Yellow, Parulas, Yellow-throated, Magnolia, Chesnut-sided, Blackburnian (all sites, including 3 at Blacklick), Black-thr.Green, Blackpoll, Redstart (2-3 at each stop), Com.Yellowthroat, Canada (singing birds at both Sycamore Creek and Blacklick Woods), and Yellow-br.Chat (1 singing in field east of Confluence) Tanagers - Scarlets were singing at Confluence and Portman, while a Summer was singing at the Confluence Grosbeaks,Buntings - singing Rose-br.Grosbeaks were at every stop, as were 3-6 Indigo Buntings Sparrows - little other than the expected Field-Chipping-Song trio Orioles - Baltimores at every stop, with 3-4 at the Confluence area. I couldn't find Orchards at either Confluence or Portman, spots where they've nested before. ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
