What I would suggest is to use something that will move and annoy/scare the woodpecker. If you would put a balloon, that would work. Or maybe flagging tapes so it would constantly move with the wind. The thing is, the woodpecker might start this "bad" habit when it discovers that pecking on a house might make more noise than pecking at a tree in the forest: which is perfect for mate attraction of territorial purposes. I have heard mentioning that woodpecker could still be pecking if you put a piece of metal... So, think of something that would constantly be in motion where the woodpecker goes and that might work. Unless he is creating a nest cavity, he either likes the sound...good luck there....just thinking out loud here I wonder if screwing a piece of steel rod on the beam will change the sound dynamics enough for it to not like it...deadening it. or it is time to call the exterminator cause you have delicious edibles where it is pecking, but when I am out in the woods, those aren't usually loud...just damaging. I have many woodpeckers in our woods, but none have taken an interest in my house until now. I have seen a variety of opinions on "googling"- does anybody have an effective way to get them away?
