Hi all, We have the typical feeders you might see anywhere in this area‹a sunflower seed feeder, a peanut feeder, suet, and niger seed out in the yard for Goldfinches‹and during migration, seed on the ground for sparrows. We sometimes feel a little jealous of friends who have big back yards or live in the woods and get all sorts of visitors... But today we had quite a treat. Just as I was sitting down to lunch, a female Pileated Woodpecker made a try at the sunflower seeds‹maybe two feet from my startled eyes‹no good, the feeder was too small for her to settle, and she ended up hanging onto the nearby Red Maple trunk for a short while before taking off again. Does this mean we should get a bigger feeder? Probably not... But it is a reminder of the role luck plays in birding‹if she had come right now, who¹d know it, with no one in the kitchen?
