First is a 9 am bird walk I'll be leading for kids and families at Ottawa NWR. Everyone is welcome and I'd love some help with what we think might be a sizable group. All reports are for a very birdy day. The second Saturday walk is for Ohio Ornithological Society members and friendsat 3 pm at Meadowbrook Marsh on the Marblehead peninsula. This under-birded site is a patch of great wetland habitat near the Erie shore. It's also the place where Carbon Offset Bird Project funds donated by birders at last fall's Midwest Birding Symposium will be used to acquire additional critical bird habitat. This informal walk will be focused on appreciating the habitat and birds and celebrating the generosity of birders and volunteers who are moving this project forward. I hope to see you there! Please count us in as a player. We are actively growing native shrubs for our own large scale restoration projects we would be glad to offer workshop space and practic= al demonstrations of propagation techniques.=20 I would also put forward that in NE OH, CMNH, Lake SWCD, all NE OH IBA landholders, LEAP, ODNR, and OH Nurserymen all have large roles to play i= n plant selection, propagation, and distribution. Lots to think about and l= ots of planning and commitment will be required to handle planting Headlands = SNP alone, not to mention long term maintenance. Size requirements for cover species during migration and the types of foo= d that need to be available in Spring are key pieces of the puzzle. CMNH should be able to steer stakeholders to what should be at Headlands besid= es Invasive Honeysuckles. Cutting and replacing stands of invasive honeysuck= les with 6-8 ft native plants can be done if one has 2 years of lead time tho= ugh so a question of staging becomes and issue. Native friendly nurseries lik= e Klyn would be a great partner as well.=20 At Holden staff to contact would be myself, [log in to unmask] and Ro= ger Gettig, [log in to unmask] ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society. These areas are important for overall bird conservation and birders for the same reasons: large numbers of birds use these habitats. In fact, priorities for overall bird conservation and for birders should have very little conflict. It is important to protect and enhance areas with high concentrations of birds and doing so will ensure long term recreational opportunities. Therefore, restoration efforts in the Headlands Dune Preserve would be an excellent opportunity to support bird conservation while promoting bird-based recreational opportunities, both of which are core OBCI goals. It is my hope that successful restoration of native plants at site that is frequented by birders will serve to strengthen the essential connection between birding and bird conservation, and could serve as a model for invasive species removal efforts across the state which are so desperately needed. Thanks to everyone who has responded in support of this project! Please visit our website and subscribe to our newsletter to stay updated on this and other OBCI projects. I was watching a large flock of bank swallows that started flocking up. I figured there must be a raptor nearby so I started looking around. I looked up just in time to catch a immature golden eagle passing directly overhead. The white spots at the base of the primaries and the white on the base of the tail told me immediately i had a golden eagle. The bird unfortunately was heading east fast and disappeared into the trees before I could get a photo. What was interesting is there were very few birds moving along the lake this morning. Other birds of note this morning were 17 species of warblers including orange-crowned, mourning, and 2 chats. I also had a couple alder flycatchers and at least 14 willows. There was also a sedge wren.
