Spent the morning on North Bass Island with researchers from Stone Lab. Much of the island is an undeveloped state park. Below is a census of what we had while there from 0700 to noon. Most of the time was spent on the south and east side of the island in and around the vineyards and grasslands. This the area between Kenny Road and Peeple Road south of Tuhan Road and southeast to Honey Point. It was somewhat windy and very warm so few birds seemed to be singing. 50 species were observed. Some numbers are estimates. This island could have a lot of birding potential if it is properly managed in the future. The grassland habitat could easily harbor more grassland species and numbers than we found. The Dickcissels and Henslow's Sparrow were somewhat of a surprise but the habitat is currently there. Sedge Wrens could easily be possible as well. We didn't spend much time in the woodlots. 23 Mallard 52 Double-crested Cormorant 14 Great Blue Heron 1 Cooper's Hawk (juvenile) 4 Killdeer 2 American Woodcock 20 Ring-billed Gull 75 Herring Gull 1 Caspian Tern 2 Mourning Dove 2 Yellow-billed Cuckoo 4 Chimney Swift 1 Ruby-throated Hummingbird 4 Downy Woodpecker 2 Northern Flicker 1 Eastern Wood-Pewee 1 Willow Flycatcher 1 Great Crested Flycatcher 8 Eastern Kingbird 4 Warbling Vireo 2 Red-eyed Vireo 3 Blue Jay 18 Purple Martin 75 Tree Swallow 175 Barn Swallow 5 Black-capped Chickadee 3 Carolina Wren 3 House Wren 1 Wood Thrush 32 American Robin 1 Gray Catbird 550 European Starling 22 Cedar Waxwing 36 Yellow Warbler 2 Chipping Sparrow 1 Field Sparrow 1 Henslow's Sparrow 8 Northern Cardinal 7 Indigo Bunting 8 Dickcissel 1 Bobolink 350 Red-winged Blackbird 1 Eastern Meadowlark 37 Common Grackle 35 Brown-headed Cowbird 11 Orchard Oriole 7 Baltimore Oriole 9 House Finch 10 American Goldfinch 25 House Sparrow -- H.
