On my way to a butterfly field trip yesterday, I stopped at 2 man-made wetlands near Darby Creek. The Clover Cemetery wetlands along Alton&Darby Creek Rd were almost dry, but the remaining puddles (and nearby rockpit lake) held a lot of Mallards, 3 Great Blue Herons, 2 Green Herons, and 1 Great Egret. The Silo wetlands (which will need a new name with the scrapping of the old silos) along Darby Creek Drive still had lots of water in the main pool to the NE, and had a few mallard hens with ducklings, a wood duck hen, 4 Great Blue Herons, and 1 Great Egret, along with 15-20 Kildeer around the drier parts. This spot remains the best spot locally for Dickcissels, with 6 calling in the surrounding grasslands, along with 3-4 Grasshopper Sparrows and a pair of Meadowlarks.
