I was walking my dogs in Grandview this evening and around 6:30 pm I walked up Virginia Ave. and heard a deep guttural croaking call coming from a tall pine tree. It was followed by a short, slightly breathy intake sound (sorry my descriptors are not very precise). The bird continued to make these calls and I was able to find locate the source near the top of the pine tree. Since I am not familar with all of the calls of a crow, when I saw that it was a large black bird making the sounds, I assumed it was a crow. When I got home, I went through all of the voice ID resources that I have. The sound I heard wasnt anything close to what a crow or grackle would make. Whatbird.com has a raven recording that is almost exactly what I heard so I assume that would be the only bird it could be. http://identify.whatbird.com/obj/104/overview/Common_Raven.aspx By the time I realized this was a rarity, I was already on my way out of town for work and couldnt go back to get pictures or a recording to confirm. Hopefully he will be there tomorrow or even tonight if anyone is close by. The address is 1313 Virginia Ave. just north of 3rd Ave in Grandview.
