Kathi, I looked up Tree Swallow on the Cornell Labs "Birds of North America" site and they suggest that "Second Brood Per Season ... where second broods have been regularly observed (e.g. California: Wasserman 2003; Virginia: Monroe et al. 2008), egg laying for second broods is typically concurrent with that of late-breeding females laying for the first time or laying replacement clutches after the failure of their first (e.g. Virginia: 7-26 Jun; Monroe et al. 2008)." If you had a successful set of fledged young, sounds like you may have a (different) late breeding female. What fun! Janet Duerr Athens, OH --------------- I have had Tree Swallows nesting on my five acre lot in SE Clermont County for about 8 years now. For the first time, they have produced a second clutch. Five young fledged from the first nesting, and I thought we were done for the season. Unlike in previous years, there has been an adult pair hanging around in the past week or so. A nest box (actually nest gourd) check this week found three eggs. I have no way of knowing if this second clutch is from the same parent birds as the first, or if another pair took advantage of a pre-made nest on prime real estate. Can any nest monitors shed some light on this subject? Either way, it is nice to have Tree Swallows around for a while longer. ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
