On Sunday, June 17, Pat Hayes, Paula Bartlett, and I conducted the 15th June monthly census. 66 species and 8254 individuals were observed on the census route. The 15 year average for the June census is 61 species and 3245 individuals, so both numbers were up. Two new species were added to the June census list. Those were a Marsh Wren at the North Pond and a singing male Black-throated Blue Warbler along the North Pond trail. This individual is believed to be a late migrant. Unusual June species included two Great Black-backed Gulls (3rd time) and six Caspian Terns (4th time). Only surprising miss was Belted Kingfisher. Weather was comfortable in the 70'sand 80's for the census with 5-10 mph winds out of the south-southeast and basically partly cloudy to overcast skies. 443 Canada Goose 35 Mallard 221 Double-crested Cormorant 44 Great Blue Heron 4 Great Egret 8 Turkey Vulture 2 Bald Eagle 1 Cooper’s Hawk 4 Killdeer 3110 Ring-billed Gull 2175 Herring Gull 2 Great Black-backed Gull 6 Caspian Tern 4 Mourning Dove 6 Yellow-billed Cuckoo 2 Eastern Screech-Owl 23 Chimney Swift 1 Ruby-throated Hummingbird 1 Red-bellied Woodpecker 18 Downy Woodpecker 4 Northern Flicker 6 Eastern Wood-Pewee 1 Willow Flycatcher 9 Great Crested Flycatcher 21 Eastern Kingbird 1 Yellow-throated Vireo 16 Warbling Vireo 11 Red-eyed Vireo 3 Blue Jay 16 American Crow 61 Purple Martin 80 Tree Swallow 24 Northern Rough-winged Swallow 4 Bank Swallow 405 Barn Swallow 29 Black-capped Chickadee 1 White-breasted Nuthatch 4 Carolina Wren 38 House Wren 1 Marsh Wren 3 Blue-gray Gnatcatcher 166 American Robin 3 Gray Catbird 39 European Starling 71 Cedar Waxwing 1 Common Yellowthroat 9 American Redstart 115 Yellow Warbler 3 Chestnut-sided Warbler 1 Black-throated Blue Warbler 1 Yellow-breasted Chat 1 Eastern Towhee 17 Chipping Sparrow 3 Field Sparrow 1 Scarlet Tanager 71 Northern Cardinal 1 Rose-breasted Grosbeak 51 Indigo Bunting 464 Red-winged Blackbird 208 Common Grackle 18 Brown-headed Cowbird 11 Orchard Oriole 40 Baltimore Oriole 25 House Finch 10 American Goldfinch 76 House Sparrow 66 Species (average = 61) 8254 individuals (average = 3245) -- H.
