Yesterday, July 20, Paula and I conducted the 15th July census on Kelleys Island. Others who had said they would come along backed out because of light rain and high winds. We had gusts of over 30 mph. The high winds made it very difficult to hear and that affected the end result. We had 59 species and 7840 individuals. The 15-year average for July is 61 species and 3803 individuals. No new species were added to the July list which stands at 107. Semipalmated Sandpiper was observed for only the second time on a July census and a White-eyed Vireo is very uncommon anytime on the island. Eastern Wood-Pewee, Brown-headed Cowbird, and Orchard Oriole were missed for the first time. The high count of individuals was due to the large number of gulls resting and feeding around the island. The three species of gulls accounted for 70% of the individuals observed. 54 Canada Goose 1 Wood Duck 46 Mallard 27 Double-crested Cormorant 12 Great Blue Heron 11 Turkey Vulture 6 Killdeer 1 Spotted Sandpiper 2 Semipalmated Sandpiper 4 Least Sandpiper 86 Bonaparte's Gull 3380 Ring-billed Gull 1964 Herring Gull 2 Caspian Tern 9 Common Tern 2 Forster's Tern 5 Mourning Dove * Yellow-billed Cuckoo 1 Black-billed Cuckoo 1 Eastern Screech-Owl 9 Chimney Swift 4 Ruby-throated Hummingbird 1 Red-bellied Woodpecker 6 Downy Woodpecker 3 Northern Flicker 1 Willow Flycatcher 3 Eastern Phoebe 82 Eastern Kingbird 1 White-eyed Vireo 7 Warbling Vireo 2 Red-eyed Vireo 3 Blue Jay 20 American Crow 251 Purple Martin 57 Tree Swallow 1 Northern Rough-winged Swallow 9 Bank Swallow 328 Barn Swallow 56 Black-capped Chickadee 11 Carolina Wren 15 House Wren 1 Blue-gray Gnatcatcher 2 Eastern Bluebird 106 American Robin 3 Gray Catbird 139 European Starling 28 Cedar Waxwing 1 Common Yellowthroat 2 American Redstart 52 Yellow Warbler 1 Chestnut-sided Warbler 9 Chipping Sparrow 29 Northern Cardinal * Rose-breasted Grosbeak 16 Indigo Bunting 576 Red-winged Blackbird 308 Common Grackle 3 Baltimore Oriole 17 House Finch 5 American Goldfinch 20 House Sparrow 59 species 7840 individuals -- H.
