Today, Paula Bartlett, Justin Bosler, Pat Hayes, and I conducted the 15th August monthly census. It was a beautiful day on the island and birds seem to be moving. 3837 individuals of 70 species were observed on the census route. Two new species were observed for the first time on an August census; Swainson's Thrush and Cape May Warbler. This brings the number of species observed on an August census to 120. The 15 year average for species observed on an August census is 68 and the average number of individuals is 3338. So we were slightly above average on both. 133 Canada Goose 96 Mallard 566 Double-crested Cormorant 14 Great Blue Heron 13 Turkey Vulture 2 Bald Eagle 1 Cooper's Hawk 1 Red-tailed Hawk 1 Black-bellied Plover 26 Killdeer 7 Spotted Sandpiper 2 Least Sandpiper 206 Bonaparte's Gull 554 Ring-billed Gull 263 Herring Gull 8 Caspian Tern 16 Mourning Dove 1 Yellow-billed Cuckoo 1 Black-billed Cuckoo 3 Eastern Screech-Owl 7 Chimney Swift 8 Ruby-throated Hummingbird 1 Red-bellied Woodpecker 29 Downy Woodpecker 12 Northern Flicker 1 Olive-sided Flycatcher 6 Eastern Wood-Pewee 1 Yellow-bellied Flycatcher 2 Willow Flycatcher 5 Least Flycatcher 3 Empidonax species? 2 Eastern Phoebe 3 Great Crested Flycatcher 61 Eastern Kingbird 7 Warbling Vireo 10 Red-eyed Vireo 12 Blue Jay 43 American Crow 154 Purple Martin 16 Tree Swallow 5 Bank Swallow 565 Barn Swallow 102 Swallow species? 78 Black-capped Chickadee 1 White-breasted Nuthatch 7 Carolina Wren 9 House Wren 2 Blue-gray Gnatcatcher 1 Eastern Bluebird 1 Swainson's Thrush 144 American Robin 3 Gray Catbird 61 European Starling 70 Cedar Waxwing 2 Black-and-white Warbler 4 Tennessee Warbler 2 American Redstart 6 Cape May Warbler 1 Magnolia Warbler 22 Yellow Warbler 1 Blackpoll Warbler * Palm Warbler 29 Warbler species? * Eastern Towhee 19 Chipping Sparrow 2 Scarlet Tanager 63 Northern Cardinal 15 Indigo Bunting 1 Red-winged Blackbird 38 Common Grackle 2 Brown-headed Cowbird 92 Baltimore Oriole 2 House Finch 36 American Goldfinch 154 House Sparrow 70 species 3837 individuals * = observed on island but not on census route Tom -- H.
