We visited The Mosquito Creek State Wildlife Area in north central Trumbull County, from about 3:45 PM to 4:30 PM this afternoon. Extensive mudflats exist at the end of Mahan Denman Road, providing great shorebird habitat. We found 10 species of shorebirds; here is the list, 2 Black-bellied Plovers, 40+ Semipalmated Plovers, 65+ Killdeer, 4 Spotted Sandpipers, 20+ Solitary Sandpipers, 50+ Lesser Yellowlegs, 2 Ruddy Turnstones, 6 Semipalmated Sandpipers, 40+ Least Sandpipers, and 12 Pectoral Sandpipers. The site is located in the northwest corner of Mosquito Lake. To reach the shorebird area, take Hoagland-Blackstub Road north from SR88 to Mahan Denman Road, turn right and follow the gravel road until it runs into the lake. Look to the north (left). A scope is required!
