On a followup to Kyle Carlsen's sighting of Blue Grosbeaks at the Shelly/Willow Island gravel pit entrance yesterday, my wife Denise and I visited the location at 1:30PM and again at 2:30PM this afternoon. Both visits provided a beautiful male Blue Grosbeak sitting on the greenery at the very top of the tallest tree, looking directly toward the Willow Island smoke stacks, from the large turn around area at the entrance to Shelly's gravel pit. To reach this site from Marietta, go about seven miles north from I-77 on SR7, or about 9.3 miles south along SR7 from the St.Mary's Bridge over the Ohio River at Newport, to the Shelly entrance opposite Sheet's Run Road. Please note that this is private property! I would suggest you stay at your vehicle adjacent to SR7. The Blue Grosbeak did move around, but returned each time to the same perch.
