The rainy, blustery morning grounded modest #s of migrants around the southern end of this State Park reservoir north of Columbus this morning. Stops at Lewis Center Road, the Visitor's Center, New Galena launch, and Plumb Rd access found a steady trickle of migrants of a variety of birds, but no large fallouts. Despite regular checks of the reservoir and shore, there were no unusual waterbirds. Notables included Blue-winged Teal - despite the hunters, 3 were lurking in a pond away from the shoreline Pied-billed Grebes - a mini-movement, with 5 at 3 different sites Gulls - nothing but Ring-bills Osprey - still one fishing around the lower reservoir, near New Galena ramp today Flycatchers - Pewees still common, with birds at all stops. A Willow was in the scrub east of the Visitor's Center, while a Great Crested was calling along the Plumb access Swallows - 2 Tree Swallows were flybys at the Visitors Center Vireos - Red-eyed were at every stop, while Warbling were at Visitors Center and New Galena Wrens,Gnatcatcher - House Wrens were one of the most common birds, with 4-6 at every stop. A late-ish Blue-Gray Gnatcatcher was at New Galena. Thrushes - Swainson's had a big influx, with 30 total over all sites; New Galena alone had 12. New Galena also had 2 Wood Thrushes and a Gray-cheeked. Mimids - Catbirds still common, with 80+ over the 3 hours. 2 Mockingbirds persist in the scrub east of the Visitors Center. Cedar Waxwings - another very common migrant, with 90+ over all 4 sites Warblers - a few small mixed flocks, but no large #s. Redstarts led the parade, with 10 individuals, followed by 4 Magnolia and 3 Black&White. Also had Parulas, Nashville, Tennessees, Blackpolls, Bay-br., Yellowthroats, and Wilsons. Grosbeaks,Buntings - no buntings, but a Rose-br.Grosbeak was north of the Visitors Center Sparrows - no migrants yet, but local Chipping and Fields have flocked up Blackbirds - several grackle flocks at 2 different locations ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
