The Columbus Audubon trip to Scioto Audubon park had mixed results looking for migrant this morning. Waterbirds put in a good showing, but landbirds were spotty, with most of the migrants clustered in a few flocks in the riparian strip along the bikepath. Notables included: Great Egrets - 16 had accumulated in the shallow bay above the Greenlawn Ave dam Black-cr.Night Herons - 1 was just above the dam, while 2 others were lurking in trees along the bikepath cormorants - one of the most common birds of the morning, with perhaps 100 in 3 hours Teal/Shoveler - 1 Green-winged Teal & 1 N.Shoveler were mixed in with Mallards in the wetlands N of the Grange Center Raptors - not much, but a Cooper's Hawk made a pass at the Grange Center feeders late in the morning, and a Kestrel was over the north fields Shorebirds - nothing but Kildeer; 14 of them were in the fields near the climbing rocks Gulls - nothing but Ring-bills. There was an outflight of 60+ headed south early, presumably headed for the trash dump. Woodpeckers - lots of Downies, but nothing else Flycatchers - no Pewees, but we did have 2 Least Flycatchers with the migrant flocks along the bikepath Swallows - small groups of Rough-wings were at several spots in the park; also had brief looks at Barn & Tree Swallows Vireos - had 1 Philadelphia and 2 Warbling in the migrant flocks along the bikepath Thrushes - heard only 2 Swainson's along the bikepath, so they weren't a big part of migration here. Mimids - plenty of Catbirds, but also had Mockingbirds in 2 different spots Warblers - virtually all in the migrant flocks along the bikepath, which yielded 10 species: Tennessee, Magnolias (2), Black-thr.Green, Black-thr.Blue, Blackburnian, Blackpoll, Bay-breasted, Palms (3), Redstart, Wilson's Buntings,Grosbeak - heard single Indigo Bunting and Rose-br.Grosbeak along the bikepath, but didn't see them. Sparrows - nothing but Songs, and we looked through the fields north of the Grange Center Blackbirds - a small flock of grackles early, then nothing. No Redwings or Bobolinks in the fields and wetlands here. Butterflies and grasshoppers were very noticeable in the fields once it heated up, after 10. Among the butterfly species seen were Clouded and Orange Sulphurs, Sleepy Orange (first I've ever seen here), Cabbage Whites, Buckeyes, Pearl Crescents, Eastern Tailed Blues, Checkered Skippers, and lots of Wild Indigo Duskywings ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
