I spent a few hours roaming Gahanna Woods and several nearby parks along Blacklick Creek. At Gahanna Woods, the new flood-control wetlands are taking shape around the parking lot, replacing the pocket prairie that once stood there. Still just gouged ground, but you can start to see the contours of each pool. Fairly good day for migrants, though warblers & flycatchers were low. Also stopped at Blacklick Ridge Park and Township Cemetery Park, both of which had small migrant flocks. Notables included: Raptors - calling Red-shouldered and adult Broad-winged were at Gahanna Woods (GW) Woodpeckers - everything expected. No Red-headed; must not be enough oaks in this area. A Pileated and many flickers (6+) at GW, but no sapsuckers yet. Flycatchers - a few Pewees and Phoebes at each site Vireos - thin, with only a few Red-eyed at GW Red-br.Nuthatches - 2 were in the small pine woods at GW Wrens,Kinglets - Lots of House Wrens at all sites. 1 Ruby-cr.Kinglet at GW, my first of the season Thrushes - lots of Robins at all sites; GW had a few Swainsons Thrushes Mimids - Catbirds at all sites (GW had 12-14), while GW had 2 lingering thrashers and Township Cemetery Park had another. Cedar Waxwings - surprisingly few; only had 2 at GW Warblers - only 9 species: Tennessee, Magnolia (4), Chesnut-sided, Black-thr.Green (6), Black-thr.Blue, Cape May (5), Redstart, Ovenbird, Com.Yellowthroat (3) Tanagers - 1 Scarlet was calling at Cemetery Park Buntings,Grosbeaks - 2 Indigo Buntings were at GW, while 7 Rose-br.Grosbeaks were scattered over all 3 sites Sparrows - 1-2 Lincolns were in the meadows at GW. Numbers of Song & Chipping were at all sites, up from last month Blackbirds - no big flocks here, with only a few Redwings and Grackles as flyovers. ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
