The Kelleys Island monthly survey was conduct today, Friday, September 21. This is the 15th year for the August survey. Participants were Tom and Paula Bartlett, Tom Behlen, John Lortz, Shane and Laura Roberts. Beautiful day with lots of birds observed. One of the highlights of the day was an adult Peregrine Falcon taking an adult Ring-billed Gull within 50 feet of us at the state park beach. 84 species and 4347 individuals were observed. September averages 73 species and 5030 individuals so the species count was well average and the individuals count was slightly below average. The Pied-billed Grebes, Peregrine Falcon, and Common Tern were new for the September survey list. Bonaparte’s Gull, Black-throated Green Warbler, Bay-breasted Warbler, and Common Yellowthroat were surprising misses. Great day for a survey.
