I thought I'd try and start some discussion of what people should look for in the coming days (including TODAY!) along Erie and inland reservoirs in Ohio. Aside from the bonus ROSS'S GULL found in western NY (Cayuga lake) and the HARLEQUIN DUCK and LITTLE GULLS just mentioned on this list, states east of Ohio are reporting Leach's Storm Petrels (NY, PA, Ontario, elsewhere), a couple Wilson's Storm Petrels (NY), Storm Petrel sp. (Niagara), Northern Gannet (coastal), Cave Swallows (coastal), Red Phalarope (coastal), Harlequin Ducks (WV), Alcid sp. on Lake Ontario, coastal Northern Lapwings (MA), and the expected mix of jaegers, brant and other waterfowl (eiders, anyone?). Lots of birds were likely blown up the St. Lawrence and over land to the Great Lakes. What else should we be looking for (i.e., studying up on before heading out)? It sounds like maybe Mag. Frigatebirds, Cory's Shearwaters, Black-capped Petrels, Sooty and other terns, Band-rumped and Wilson's Storm Petrels, Tropicbirds, odd loons, ... what else? Wheatear? As for WHERE to look, your local hotspots for land birds, and larger bodies of water for the rest. Check well and often! ;-) Good birding, Paul Hurtado, Columbus, OH ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
