Oct 29, 2012 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM Hoover Dam (40.108025,-82.882082), Franklin, US-OH Comments: High winds, off-and-on rain; cold. From the SW area at the dam. Few birds, several Ring-necked Ducks and an ad. Greater White-fronted Goose flying low bucking the winds in a flock of 20 Canada Geese. Several small flocks of Canada Geese had passed, low and at varying distances, most common from areas east of the dam but some trying to travel east, bucking the high winds. Watching one small flock, an adult GWFG was among them, flying flying fairly close at about 100 yds; it slender trim size and proportionately shorter neck with quicker lighter flight was easily noted. While its colorful bill, black bars across belly and gray sheen across the wings (contrasting with the dark flight feathers), and brown head and neck (fading into paler underbody) were further evidence. The wings were rather long and slim in proportion, wingbeats shallow and stiff, with an agile look. The continued on, from east then heading west, shifting position, the white-front always five or so back to middle of flock..... 2 species (+1 other taxa) Greater White-fronted Goose (Anser albifrons) 1 see comments; in flight, colorful bill, gray sheen across upper wings, brown head and breast. Ring-necked Duck (Aythya collaris) 7 Sharp-shinned/Cooper's Hawk (Accipiter striatus/cooperii) 1 David Tan Columbus OH [log in to unmask] View this checklist online at http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S11908321 This report was generated automatically by eBird v3 (http://ebird.org) ______________________________________________________________________ Ohio-birds mailing list, a service of the Ohio Ornithological Society.
