At 3 pm, I found a Northern Shrike on the power/telephone line along the south side of Veler Road about half way between Rt 2 and the gate to Ottawa NWR. The shrike apparently was finishing a meal as it dropped something when it flew to a small bush along the west edge of the wetland area. However, it disappeared quickly when I opened my door to get my scope for a closer view. This bird may be one of several reported or the bird reported in the Ottawa NWR area and at Metzger Marsh. This was the end of 3 days of birding across northern Ohio after a trip to Bridgewater, Massachusetts to successfully see and photograph the Northern Lapwing, a post-Thanksgiving trip after visiting family in PA. I birdeded at Conneaut, Ashtabula, Lakeview Park, Walnut Beach and Headlands Park on Monday with the birds of note being redpolls overhead calling, an after first summer Great Black-backed Gull wth thousands of RBGU & HERG which were scattered by an immature Bald Eagle at Conneaut & 50 - 75 Common Redpolls in the alders along the flats inside the rock wall/jetty east toward the river at Walnut Beach. Tuesday I started at Headlands, then Fairport Harbor, E 72nd & 55th Street, Edgewater SP, Whiskey Island Marina looking for Purple Sandpiper, unusual gulls & waterfowl continuing west to Lorain & Huron & the Ottawa area on Wednesday.
