Things were real slow today with nothing of note. What few mergansers went by were all very small flocks. Gulls were up a bit today, but they were very high heading east. Conditions should have been good yesterday and today for a decent movement of birds. Winds have been out of the north and the barometer has been steadily rising. These are the conditions I look for to see a decent movement. It seems like most of the brant and scoters may have headed off to the coast. The question is how much of the waterfowl that spend the fall locally took advantage of the north winds and also headed out. The past storm occurred the last few days of October, which is early for the huge diver movements. The best days for them are often right around Veteran's Day, November 11. I remember a day back in the 1980s when there was a one day huge waterfowl movement. Hunters complained the rest of the fall wondering where all the ducks were. There were a lot fewer ducks around the entire fall that year. Even though it was still October, there was an incredible movement last Saturday and each day since has seen fewer birds. It will be interesting to see what happens with waterfowl numbers later this month.
