One more thing about this mistaken ID. There is, in addition to Trautman's bird of 1947, a much older confirmed record of the great gray owl from Ohio; a specimen, #16625 at the Ohio State Museum, from Trumbull County, collected in November or December 1898. I caution folks not to count on eBird for historical records. Trautman, who saw and reported the Starve Island bird, refused to count it on his official state list of 1968 because he didn't have his shotgun the day he saw it, nor was he aware of the Trumbull County specimen at the time. Rob Harlan includes a nice photo of this bird in the fall 1992 issue of the Ohio Cardinal, where he discusses it and six other old reports of this species in the state.
